The network's Top New Show of This Year Gets a Major Extension for Two More Seasons.

Last October, Adult Swim saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the channel unveiled a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a laid-back talk show. At a time often characterized by cynicism, this show's earnestness struck a chord and helped it become a breakout hit.

A Major Commitment

In mid-December, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."

Executive Acclaim

The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and supported its distinctly quirky style.

"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about watching this charming family navigate their daily lives.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to help comedy break out of its prevailing sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

The Path Forward

Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to experience the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
