Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has secured a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, which kicks off on January 18 in the city of Melbourne.

The event organizers confirmed on Friday that the forty-five-year-old legend will make a return at Melbourne Park a remarkable 28 years after her first appearance. Back in 1998, she defeated her sibling Serena in the second round before exiting in the quarter-finals to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Summer Swing

Venus had earlier stated in November her plans to play in Auckland, New Zealand, where she also received a wild card, two weeks prior to the Melbourne event. Organizers added that Williams is scheduled to participate in Hobart, Australia a week later, just before the action begins at the main venue.

Her most recent visit in Melbourne was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the singles competition on two separate instances, falling short against Serena in the championship matches of 2003 and 2017.

"I am thrilled to be back in Australia and eagerly anticipating competing during the Australian summer," Williams said. "I’ve had so many incredible moments there, and I’m grateful for the chance to go back to a place that has been so significant to my career."
