The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of intriguing future games, but one in particular has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"It's a unique experience where a young woman containing several personalities within her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of high school age. Inside her exist four separate personas, all possessing unique anxieties and motivations. These souls can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her suddenly.
Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie medical facility, though additional clips show the protagonist exploring a desolate church.
"What are you fearful of? What causes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Things that appear minor to others can trigger something primal inside us. This game explores that concept — fears that are unique to every individual."
The core gameplay loop revolves around managing the persona that emerges at a particular moment. However, these souls will switch against your will during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's fears become amplified and attack the protagonist one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with orderlies all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the lobby have large blooms growing from their heads should be. Flowers are a recurring element, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four souls asserts that the body belongs to them," explains a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
After a player believes a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. However, because every entity can lie or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The last one standing might be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is can be follow on digital storefronts.
