A popular South African radio and club DJ has been shot dead in the metropolis of Johannesburg, causing national outrage across a country grappling with rampant crime.
Warrick Stock, who went by the name DJ Warras, was gunned down in the downtown area on a Tuesday afternoon.
Police said the 40-year-old media personality was confronted by a trio of assailants, one of whom began shooting at him before escaping on foot.
The reason of the attack has not been established and no arrests are in custody, as per the official statement.
Authorities said that Stock was ambushed as he was leaving a location in the vicinity of the city center landmark.
He had been present for hours at the site supervising the setup of safety equipment, which had been illegally inhabited by squatters, according to reports.
"The report indicates the deceased was approached by three unknown suspects after he parked his car, and they opened fire at him before fleeing the scene on foot," a police statement confirmed.
Surveillance tape reportedly depicted a man with dreadlocks and clad in what resembled a guard's attire firing shots on Stock before making his escape.
The DJ attempted to flee after he was hit but fell down on the opposite side of the road.
It was further revealed that Stock had an weapon on his person and no items were stolen during the assault.
Important clues, like spent shells, were recovered from the location.
Authorities have requested anyone who saw the event who may have witnessed the attack to come forward.
"Our information indicates they covered significant ground after the shooting, and officers have been tracking them to determine their location," stated a police chief.
His family member, Nicole Stock, expressed the loved ones are reeling to come to terms with the loss.
"I am devastated. I am shattered," were her words.
"It is clear he was a voice for many people. He spoke out bravely about issues not many people were willing to discuss. This is a devastating blow."
