The beloved crime series Line of Duty will make a comeback for its seventh season, announced by the BBC.
An upcoming six-episode series written by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Belfast this spring, as confirmed by the production team.
The actress shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, saying she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."
The previous series concluded in recent years with a final episode that attracted more than 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been widespread ever since, but official word only came this week.
Series seven will open with AC-12 no longer existing and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.
Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings continue tasked to tackle corruption within the police force.
The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, the trio are assigned their "most delicate case to date."
An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer celebrated for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to become a sexual predator.
Yet, this investigation might serve as a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still operating in the shadows, the teaser suggested.
Speaking about the renewal, the creator commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."
"We're privileged to have had so many fans watch the developments of AC-12 over multiple series and we are thrilled to be coming back for a new season."
Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in this country was thought to be over while the series was off air, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."
Martin Compston called being part of the police drama as "the role of a career".
"Beyond the show's success but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."
"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.
The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "It goes without saying I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Eager to work with Jed, Compston and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"
Adrian Dunbar noted: "As we count down the unit return, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."
"Delighted with the announcement and anticipating those unexpected twists and turns."
The drama premiered in the early 2010s and evolved into a highly successful television series of the last decade, featuring notable actors such as Lennie James.
The BBC haven't revealed exactly the new season will hit screens.
The finale of season six brought the long-running storyline about the search for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and producers said at the time there were no plans for additional seasons.
However, the network confirmed on this week that a new season is now in development.
