Larry Summers Leaves from AI Company's Directors

Board Resignation
Summers announced he would withdraw from public positions after legislative body disclosed his repeated communications with Jeffrey Epstein

One-time economic leader Larry Summers is leaving the directorate at OpenAI, just days after a series of electronic messages between him and late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein became widely known.

He remarked in a statement that he was "grateful for the opportunity to have participated, optimistic about the potential of the enterprise, and look forward following their development".

The prominent academic, who once headed the Ivy League institution, declared on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public responsibilities due to his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.

Email Communications

The freshly disclosed communications showed that Summers exchanged messages with Jeffrey Epstein until the eve of Epstein's 2019 detention for accused human trafficking of minors.

In additional comments, the AI firm expressed it understood his decision to depart.

"We value his many contributions and the viewpoint he provided to the governing body," the organization stated.

Congressional Action

This news comes after the entire Congress of Congress voted on recently to pass a legislation that would compel the US justice department to release its files on Epstein.

The measure will subsequently move to the office of the White House for endorsement. Trump has stated he plans to endorse the measure, after reversing his view on the subject following pushback from his followers.

Correspondence Findings

A group of Epstein-connected messages released by the legislative panel last week included several high-profile figures in the financier's former circle, without implying any illegal behavior by those figures.

The emails showed that the professor and Epstein regularly had dinners together, with he often seeking to connect the official to prominent global figures.

Personal Accountability

After the messages were made available with the wider community, the former official stated he took "complete accountability for my misguided choice to persist in interacting with Mr Epstein".

He further stated that he wanted "to rebuild trust and repair relationships with the people closest to me".

Previous Positions

The professor occupied leadership roles under two Democratic presidents; functioning as treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, and as director of the economic advisory body under President Obama.

He headed the institution from five years and remains a academic there. When declaring his step-down from public commitments earlier on Monday, he indicated he would continue his academic responsibilities.

Additional Consequences

Following Summers' declaration on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a liberal research organization in Washington where he was a researcher, verified that the economist was ceased to be connected with the organization.

Summers entered the directorate of the AI company, which makes ChatGPT, in the previous year - following a unsuccessful effort to remove its CEO OpenAI's head.
