For Bellingham to wants to earn his place into England’s best starting eleven, he would be wise to eliminate the dramatics. His response after noticing that the substitute board was about to come up following a night of uneven play in Tirana was not good enough.
"I don’t want to make more out of it but I stand by my words 'conduct is crucial' and respect towards the squad members who substitute on," commented the coach. "Substitutions happen and you need to comply as a player."
Bellingham has to learn. There was no call for an outburst. The captain had recently scored to make the national team two goals ahead in a dead rubber qualifier, there were six minutes left and Bellingham, who had not played particularly well, was just shown a yellow for fouling the Albanian striker. This was hardly a questionable change. In fact it would have been unwise for the head coach to not substitute him because there was a chance the midfielder would be suspended of the first match of the World Cup by getting a second caution.
But Bellingham made himself the center of attention. It was impossible to miss the young midfielder's frustration as he realized that he was going to make way for Morgan Rogers. His arms went up in exasperation and although he accepted the coach's hand on his way to the bench there was no doubt that the head coach did not appreciate it.
This is the challenge facing Bellingham. He praised his teammate for delivering the cross for Harry Kane to head in the team's second, but the rest was harmful to his cause. It is not as if complaining was going to alter the decision. Tuchel has repeatedly emphasized honoring the team structure and the value of behaving correctly.
Bellingham, not included in the team last month, has faced close inspection upon his return to the team recently. Essentially he has been on trial and his actions haven't benefited him through his behavior to coming off the pitch as the side wrapped up a flawless qualification run by seeing off a tough opposition from Albania.
It means opinions are divided on how the team function at their best with Bellingham in the team. What we saw was not definitive. Some new ideas were tested from the manager at the start. Under him, England have gained the squad structure and clarity in recent months, using a defensive midfielder, a central midfielder, an attacking midfielder and out-and-out wingers, but the approach changed against Albania. Quansah was made his England debut, Adam Wharton started for the first time at this level and the use of the defender as a part-time midfielder gave a passing resemblance to Manchester City’s 2023 treble winners.
Bellingham was a mixed bag. He set up a shot for Eberechi Eze in the latter period but frequently appeared trying too hard. He made many poorly executed passes. An unnecessary confrontation against an opponent in the early stages. The team looked disjointed after halftime. An opportunity for Albania resulted from he lost the ball cheaply. His caution was shown after he lost the ball to Broja and fouled the former Chelsea striker.
In the end England’s depth was decisive. The coach brought on Foden, who looked more naturally fitted to the spot occupied by Bellingham in the opening period, and Saka. In time Saka whipped in a set-piece for the captain to score the first goal. It was a reminder that set pieces will be crucial next summer.
However, all talk was about Bellingham. The brilliance of the winger's delivery for Kane’s header was a little lost due to the fuss of the Rogers substitution. When the match concluded, everyone was watching Bellingham. Tuchel came over from behind and guided Bellingham to acknowledge the English fans. The bond between them is not damaged. The coach isn't ready to discard Bellingham yet. However, whether the coach is prepared to offer him the central position remains in doubt.
