Hamilton Island, a Popular Queensland Getaway on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Set to be Sold by American Private Equity Firm.

A major resort island located on the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a American investment group for a sum reportedly valued at 1.2 billion Australian dollars.

Details of the Acquisition Agreement

The New York-headquartered, Blackstone – which also owns the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – announced it had entered into an agreement to acquire the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family owners, pending standard approvals from regulators.

The family issued a comment saying they were pleased with the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the affections of many Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.

The Island's Scale and Features

Located almost 900km north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, Hamilton spans over 1,130 hectares across two islands.

Approximately 30% of the area is built upon, including a substantial array of amenities:

• Five separate hotels
• More than 20 dining and drinking venues
• Twenty shops and retail spaces
• An 18-hole championship golf course on neighboring Dent Island
• A marina and a commercial airport

Hamilton Island is noted as a significant employer in the Whitsunday region, sustaining a large on-island community and staff, as well as a broad network of regional partners, vendors, and local businesses.

Historical Context at The Island's History

The late Robert Oatley, a renowned yachtsman and winemaker, first bought the resort for $200 million in 2003 after spying the island from the deck a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsundays.

The island's major development phase first began in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was home to galvanised iron huts and more humble quarters that hosted Australian vacationers from inland areas and southern states.

Broader Portfolio and Local Heritage

The acquiring firm has ownership of luxury hotels and resorts in multiple countries, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.

The area is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro people. The name derives from Captain James Cook, who navigated the Endeavour through the island group on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
