Government Seeks Help from Top Court Following Failed Attempt to Block Food Stamp Aid Order

This past Friday, just moments following a federal appeals court ruled that the government is required to pay for nutritional assistance payments, the administration sought intervention from the supreme court in a further bid to block the ruling.

Within hours, the top US court handed down an temporary injunction immediately suspending entire Snap food aid funds, which nearly 42 million people rely on to put food on the table.

“Our attorneys will not stop battling, day and night, to defend and advance the president's agenda,” a senior official announced on social media just after 9:30pm ET.

Government representatives had petitioned the US appeals court to overturn a judicial decision requiring them to distribute the upcoming complete food stamp assistance during a federal closure, and had their request rejected that afternoon.

The supreme court's ruling was issued after the administration asked a US appellate court on Friday to block a judicial directive mandating they provide this month's entire food stamp assistance amid a federal closure.

Following that petition to halt faced refusal, the government sought help from the supreme court in a new effort to prevent the ruling to fully fund Snap food aid payments.
