Gavin Newsom Acknowledges He Is Evaluating a White House Bid in 2028

The California governor, a prominent Democratic figure, has disclosed that he intends to decide on whether to seek the White House in 2028 following the 2026 midterm elections wrap up.

"Absolutely, it would be dishonest otherwise," the governor commented when asked about contemplating a campaign for president post the 2026 midterms. "I'd just be lying. And I won't do that."

The governor's time in office as California's leader concludes in early 2027, and term limits prevent another run. But, he cautioned that any determination is a long way off.

"Fate will determine that," he said.

Rising Profile as a Political Adversary

The California governor has come to the forefront as a high-profile opponent of the Trump administration, leveraging his online platforms and pushing a ballot measure that would expand Democratic House seats in following redistricting by Republicans. This move has drawn criticism from critics.

Clash on Transportation

Donald Trump's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, accused that Newsom shows no concern about Californians in a recent appearance on Fox News. Duffy announced a strategy to cut federal funds from California and threatened revoking the power to provide commercial driver's licenses.

"I'm about to pull a significant sum from California," he declared, in the wake of a recent deadly accident in California involving an unauthorized semi truck driver that led to loss of life and injured individuals.

Newsom's office noted that the federal government had approved the worker's status repeatedly, which permitted him to obtain a commercial driver's license under federal law.

Duffy had earlier indicated he was blocking $40 million from California for failing to implement linguistic standards for CDL holders.

Pointed Reply from the Administration

"Ex-reality TV personality, now cabinet member, fails to grasp U.S. regulations," Newsom's office retorted in a last month's comment responding to the funding warnings. "In the meantime, as opposed to this individual, we focus on reality: The state's commercial driver's license holders had a death rate nearly 40% lower than the countrywide rate. Texas – the only state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate substantially higher than California. Statistics are clear. This administration is dishonest."

Public Opinion and Political Future

A recently conducted poll revealed that a majority of the party and 48% of all registered voters indicated that Newsom should run for president in 2028. After the current administration began, public support for the governor has risen to an mean of about one-third from around 30%, while his negative ratings has decreased from an typical level of previous highs to under 40%.

In previous months, Newsom remarked while traveling several swing states that he had "uncertainty" about his future for 2028.

He also referenced his earlier challenges, including being identified as dyslexic at the age of five.

"The notion that a person who scored 960 on the SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was often seated at the back – the fact that this is even suggested is, alone, amazing," he commented. "Who the hell knows? I await who emerges in 2028 and who rises to the occasion. And that is the issue for the American people."
