Three police officers lost their lives and no fewer than 15 additional individuals were hurt in what appears to be intentional detonation from gas at a farmhouse in Italy's north.

Event Timeline

The explosion was triggered as police and firefighters entered the property close to the Verona region to carry out an removal notice for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.

All three deceased individuals belonged to the Carabinieri force.

Investigation Developments

Two individuals were arrested at the scene and one more individual who fled after the blast was located soon after. The trio have been taken to hospital.

The explosion could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the scene revealed the building turned into a pile of rubble.

“This is a time for grieving,” commented the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who mentioned that efforts had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the past.

Background and Motive

The president of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, explained the farmhouse was under an removal notice due to financial obligations incurred by the siblings.

Negotiators had been dispatched to engage the brothers and sister who had barricaded themselves into the property. When the officers reached the location just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators suspect one of the residents triggered the blast.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief Commander Papagno told the media.

A propane tank had been activated, and the blast immediately struck our personnel,” he said.

Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the site, the Interior Minister stated.

Impact Assessment

Those injured by the incident included an additional 11 personnel of the police force as well as three officers of national police and a firefighter.

As stated by the local prosecutor, the property was in a derelict state and had was without power.

The official thought the blast had occurred on a floor above the entrance and told journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the explosion, he mentioned members had “heard a whistle, likely the gas cylinders being turned on”.

Local Response

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” neighbors informed reporters, mentioning that the family members had previously threatened to “blow themselves up” rather than vacate the property.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Defence Minister Guido Crosetto joined other government officials in commemorating the three officers who had been killed in the line of duty.
